The country’s reigning gold medalist Jean Claude Saclag has reached the semifinals of the 31st Southeast Asian Games’ kickboxing event being held in Hanoi, Vietnam.

The 27-year-old defeated Latxasak Souliyavon of Laos with a 3-0 sweep in the men’s low kick -63.5 division on Sunday (May 8) at the Multi-Purpose Hall Gymnasium in Bac Ninh and is now guaranteed to receive a bronze medal.

However, the fight is still not over for the Filipino warrior who hails from Kalinga and Benguet. Saclag will be facing off with Vietnamese contender Vu Truong Giang for a spot in the gold medal round.

“I really need to be dominant in my performance here,” Saclag shared. “I will do everything to win the gold medal,” he added.

If he makes it to the last match, Saclag will be up against either Chalemlap Santidongsakun of Thailand or San Rakim of Cambodia.

Before becoming a decorated kickboxer, Saclag was a Wushu World Cup champion in sanda and clinched a silver medal at the Incheon 2014 Asian Games.

He won gold in the same kickboxing event at the 2019 SEA Games, which was held in the Cuneta Astrodome in Pasay City.
