The Philippines now has its first gold in the 31st SEA Games! And that’s thanks to Pencak Silat fighter Mary Francine Padios, who bested her Indonesian opponent in the women’s artistic seni tunggal event at the Bac Tu Liem Gymnasium in Vietnam Wednesday (May 11).
Padios improved on her 2019 SEA Games record, wherein she won the silver medal, by beating reigning champion Puspa Arumsari in the final after tallying 9,960 with her opponent scoring 9,945.
The two top athletes shared a hug center stage before Padios was announced the overall winner and ran around whilst carrying and waving the PH flag.
On her way to the gold, the young athlete also managed to dominate host country Vietnam’s bet Vuong Thi Binh in the semifinal and outclassed Thai foe Nurisan Loseng in the quarterfinal.
