Filipino pole vaulter EJ Obiena has finally broken his previous indoor pole vault record, clearing 5.91 meters at the 2022 Perch Elite Tour on Sunday in Rouen, France.
The 26-year-old achieved the feat in his first attempt, surpassing the 5.86m national record he set at last year’s Orlen Cup in Poland.
The jump assured PH’s lone pole vaulter of the silver medal, putting him behind 2020 Tokyo Olympics silver medalist Chris Nilsen of the United States, who seized the gold with an impressive 6.05m.
Meanwhile, Tokyo Games bronze medal winner Thiago Braz of Brazil copped the bronze with 5.91m via countback.
This is Obiena’s first second-place finish in the current season as he earned gold medals in both the Orlen Cup and Orlen Copernicus Cup in Poland earlier this year.
The world’s No. 5 also came close to the Asian record in the men’s indoor pole vault. Obiena’s jump was just 0.01m short of tying Igor Potapovich 5.92m record.
