Fil-Canadian tennis player Leylah Fernandez has earned herself a spot in the quarter-finals of the Monterrey Open after beating China’s Zheng Qinwen 6-1, 4-6, 7-6 (3) on Wednesday (Thursday PH Time).

The 19-year-old, who is currently number 21 in the WTA World Rankings, is hoping for a repeat of her last year’s performance, wherein she took home the 2021 title.

Though Fernandez easily swept Zheng in the first set, she struggled in the second. However, in the third set, she found her rhythm again ending the match in a tiebreaker.

After bowing out of the Australian Open earlier this season, the Monterrey Open is Fernandez’s first singles tournament.

The young tennis player, who hails from Laval in Quebec, is aiming to replicate her strong game in last year’s season wherein she snatched her first career WTA title and reached the U.S. Open finals.

For her next match, Fernandez will be facing off against another Chinese opponent – Qiang Wang. If she wins, she’ll advance to the semi-finals.
