After a less than stellar opening this 2022 season, Filipino pole vaulter EJ Obiena has bounced back – earning the top place at the 2022 Orlen Cup on Saturday (February 11) in Lodz, Poland.

Obiena ultimately bagged the gold medal in the tournament after leaping 5.81 meters, which is also his current best this season.

The 26-year-old athlete showed consistency in his jumps clearing 5.51, 5.71, and 5.81-meter heights all in his first try. However, he failed to break his 5.86m record from last year’s cup wherein he received silver.

In second place was Brazil’s Thiago Braz, the former Olympic champion, and home bet Piotr Lisek finished in third.

This win sees Obiena’s resurgence in the top after finishing low in his first two competitions this year, placing fourth in the ISTAF Indoor Athletics Meet in Berlin, Germany and eighth place in the Beijer Pole Vault Gala in Uppsala, Sweden.

After the Orlen Cup, Obiena will compete in the Meeting Hauts de France in Lievin, France on February 17 and the Orlen Copernicus Cup in Torun, Poland on February 22.
