Apart from dropping the opening date of its invitational, Maharlika Pilipinas Basketball League (MPBL) has also named a possible venue for its upcoming tourney.

On Tuesday (November 16), Commissioner Kenneth Duremdes confirmed that the league is thinking of using the Mall of Asia (MOA) Arena to kickstart its tournament, which will run from December 11 to December 21.

A total of 22 teams have been invited to participate in the event, which marks the league’s return after a 9-month hiatus.

According to Duremdes, this is the right time to reignite the league.

“Matagal nang gusto ng mga team owners na mag-resume tayo, pero hindi pwede. Pero this is the right time, I think,” Duremdes shared during the Philippine Sportswriters Association (PSA) Forum.

“We have 22 teams na magpa-participate. And hopefully today, ma-confirm namin ‘yung venue namin, which is MOA Arena, for the December 11 opening,” he added.

Instead of the usual home-and-away format, the MPBL will be implementing a closed-circuit system that will see participating teams travel strictly from their homes to game venues.

Duremdes added that the flow of games will follow FIBA’s style, which will see games played daily starting at 9 AM.

The teams will also be divided into four groups, playing against each other in a single round-robin format. Then, the top two teams in each group will advance to the knockout quarterfinals.

“Ngayon, subukan natin ‘yung FIBA tournament for this invitational, FIBA-type. Four groups, parang single round robin, top two of each group, parang ganoon ang initial na meeting namin,” Duremdes said.

“Parang FIBA tournament talaga siya na ‘pag nanalo ka, you move, and every day ‘yung game, Mondays to Sundays,” he added.
