The country’s port industry is set for big changes after International Container Terminal Services Inc. (ICTSI) and PLDT Group announced their shared intent to build the Philippines’ first-ever 5G-enabled ‘intelligent’ port.

According to VP and CIO of ICTSI Brian Mark Hibbert, the infrastructure will rise at their flagship port Manila International Container Terminal (MICT) and will help in raising efficiency and essential port operations.

“It’s very important to us is that we constantly drive efficiency and optimization in the cargo flows. And to do that, we also need to push that optimization, beyond the boundaries of the fence of the container terminal. To really drive this journey forward, we wanted to deploy a unified backbone of communication across the port. Hence our partnership with PLDT around 5G technology,” he said.

Hibbert noted that 5G will play an important role when it comes to engaging with their customers.

“We see many opportunities with 5G to provide rich communication, not just to the multitude of technologies that we’re deploying inside the port, but to reach out to our customers and partners across the supply chain,” he pointed out.

Meanwhile, PLDT said they’ll be working on the project together with SMART, its wireless communications and digital services subsidiary.

Early this year, ICTSI allocated $250 million for capital expenditures this 2021, specifically for the expansion and the construction of its various ports globally.
