2021 is shaping up to be a great year for Philippine sports. After the country’s stunning performance in the recently concluded Tokyo 2020 Olympics, a lot of Filipino athletes have stepped up their game and are claiming titles, awards, and wins here and there.
And one of the recent additions to this growing list of winners is the Malditas, the country’s national women’s football team.
The team, who’s currently competing in the 2022 Asian Football Confederation (AFC) Women’s Asian Cup qualifiers, scored a win against Nepal at the JAR Stadium in Tashkent, Uzbekistan on September 18.
The Filipina football players wrapped up the game with two late goals from Tahnai Annis and Camille Wilson.
According to Head coach Marlon Maro, the girls navigated the last minutes of the game really well.
“The new players played well and initiated the first goal. Our adjustments in the second half resulted in us scoring in the last five minutes,” Maro said.
After claiming this win, the Malditas will face off against Hong Kong on Friday, September 24. If they win, the game will serve as their ticket to the AFC Women’s Asian Cup India 2022.
The team is currently being managed by Jefferson Cheng and is receiving support from the Philippine Sports Commission (PSC) and MVP Sports Foundation.
