After his stunning performance at the recent FIBA events with Gilas Pilipinas, naturalized Filipino Ange Kouame has received numerous offers to play overseas.
However, the 23-year-old has promised to stay committed to Team Pilipinas until well after the FIBA World Cup.
According to Arben Santos, who serves as Kouame’s guardian and adviser, Kouame is dedicated to keeping his promise to play for the Philippines until 2023.
“He has committed that he will play only for Gilas (Pilipinas) and Ateneo (in the University Athletic Association of the Philippines or UAAP),” Santos told Inquirer.
“He will not deviate from that and he will remain focused to play in the World Cup,” Santos added.
The influx of international offers for PH Team-caliber players has been a cause of concern for Gilas program director and coach Tab Baldwin and the Samahang Basketbol ng Pilipinas (SBP).
Just recently, a lot of the team’s players signed up for overseas teams. Kai Sotto, the 7-foot-2 center, has signed with an Australian ball club. Meanwhile, guards Dwight Ramos and Thirdy Ravena are in Japan, along with Kobe Paras.
However, Kouame’s assurance has given them relief.
