Although Gilas Plipinas’ women team fought hard, they still suffered defeat at the hands of Australia’s Opals, 120-56, Tuesday at the FIBA Women’s Asia Cup in Amman, Jordan (Wednesday, PH Time).
The Filipina ballers were able to stay close behind the Australians in the first quarter of the match with only a 12-point difference, 32-20.
However, the world’s number 3 amped up its gameplay in the second quarter and left a wide gap of 51-23, which the Philippines failed to fill.
The Opals’ Keely Jane Froling finished with 21 points and 12 rebounds. Meanwhile, forward Lauren Nicholson added 21 points for the team.
On the other hand, Gilas’ Janine Pontejos pitched in the most with 13 points while Afril Bernardino scored eight points and three rebounds. Kristine Cayabyab also contributed 10 markers.
After this match, the Philippine team will be facing off against Chinese Taipei on Wednesday (Thursday midnight, Manila time). The team needs to win this next if they want a spot in the knockout phase.
