Filipino-Canadian tennis player Leylah Fernandez will continue in the quarter-finals of the 2021 US Open after she defeated 2016 champion Angelique Kerber.
Fernandez pulled off the amazing 4-6, 7-6(5), 6-2 upset against Kerber after defeating defending champion Naomi Osaka.
Although the 19-year-old lost in the first set, Fernandez battled back to claim the second set 7-6(5).
Fernandez, a Canadian by birth who has Ecuadorian and Filipino roots, solidified her gameplay in the third and last set, ultimately claiming the win for herself with a score of 6-2.
“I was just glad I was having fun on the court,” Fernandez said after her win, according to a report from BBC.
“I have been working hard since the day I started playing tennis and the day I set my mind to being a professional. I expected that one day my tennis game is going to come through and that I’m going to be on the big stage in front of a big crowd and getting the wins,” she added.
With this win, Fernandez will move on to the quarter-finals of the US Open and will be pitted against No. 5 seed Elina Svitolina.
Their match is scheduled for September 7, Tuesday (September 8, PH Time).
