Just a day after winning at the 2021 MTV Video Music Awards (VMAs), Filipino-American performers Olivia Rodrigo and Saweetie grazed the red carpet of the prestigious fashion event the Met Gala in New York.
Rodrigo looked chic and edgy in her see-through, off-shoulder YSL bodysuit emblazoned with black feathers. To complete her ensemble, the 18-year-old siren wore statement metallic drop earrings and black pumps.
Meanwhile, Saweetie wore a sequinned red dress by Christian Cowan, accentuated with body cut-outs, a thigh-high slit showing her long legs, and a long sheer train. To complete the look, the rapper styled her hair in a sleek blonde bob embellished with crystals. Accessory-wise, the 28-year-old toned it down with metallic-silver earrings and rings paired with a studded, chunky bracelet.
According to Saweetie, her dress pays homage to her ancestry.
“I have two flags draped delicately on my body. One of them is the Black American Heritage flag and the other is the Filipino flag ’cause I’m Black and Filipino, and that’s what makes me an American girl,” she said while walking the gala’s red carpet.
Rodrigo won a total of three awards at this year’s MTV VMA’s – Song of the Year for “Driver’s License,” Best New Artist, and Push Performance of the Year.
On the other hand, Saweetie brought home the VMA Moonman for Best Art Direction for her song “Best Friend” featuring Doja Cat, which was directed by Alec Contestabile.
The theme for this year’s Met Gala was “In America: A Lexicon of Fashion,” putting the spotlight on American fashion through the years.
