Besides receiving an upgraded Cantilan Port, the region of Surigao del Sur also benefited from new work opportunities provided by the rehabilitation of the infrastructure, according to the Department of Transportation.
In a Facebook post, Transportation Secretary Art Tugade said the boost in mobility and connectivity allowed more people access to the port and its construction increased job employment.
As part of its modernization, the port’s wharf was reinforced and extended to accommodate more ships and boats. A new back-up area was also constructed for it and a new lighting system was installed to make cargo operations more efficient.
“Ngayon, tapos na at napasinayaan na natin ang konstruksyon ng reinforced concrete wharf at back-up area ng Cantilan Port,” Tugade said.
Before, the port had limited capacity and was dilapidated, according to Tugade.
However, the DOTr and Philippine Ports Authority (PPA) took swift action to address the issue. And just last month, the renewed infrastructure was officially inaugurated.
