Filipina tennis sensation Alex Eala has made it to Round 16 of the 2021 US Open’s Girls’ Singles after trumping American adversary Charlotte Owensby, 6-3, 6-3, in New York on Tuesday (Wednesday, PH Time).

The 16-year-old struggled in the first round of the match going down 0-2. However, she broke free of her sluggish start to gain the upper hand in the seventh game of the first set, 4-3.

After that, Eala won two more games to claim the first set for herself. But Owensby recovered in the second set, plunging the Filipina athlete, 0-2, once again.

Though still reeling from her sudden drop, the World No. 2 regained her bearings and swept six of the next seven games, bringing the match to a close.

Eala will face Michaela Laki of Greece in the Round of 16.

Meanwhile, in the doubles’ category, Eala and partner Hanne Vandewinkel will face off with the winner of the first-round matchup between the duo of Laki and Radka Zelnickova and USA’s Tatum Evans and Amelia Honer.
