On Tuesday (September 28), the Department of Transportation (DOTr) officially announced the completion of Zamboanga International Aiport’s (ZIA) Php 74.6 million worth upgrade.

The improvement of the airport, which started in 2018, included the construction of a new passenger terminal building, which can now accommodate 750 people.

Apart from this, ZIA also received new halls – the Malasakit Hall and the Gender and Development (GAD) multi-purpose hall.

DOTr said Transportation Secretary Art Tugade visited the airport three years ago and saw how ‘run down’ it has become. And to rectify the problems, Tugade immediately teamed up with the Civil Aviation Authority of the Philippines (CAAP).

“Noon ay kalunos-lunos ang estado ng Zamboanga International Airport (ZIA) sa Mindanao. Personal itong nasaksihan ni Department of Transportation (DOTr) Secretary Art Tugade, sa kaniyang pagbisita sa airport noong 2018,” DOTr wrote in a Facebook pos.

“Kasunod nito ay agarang iniutos ni Secretary Tugade ang pagsasaayos at improvement sa Airport, at pinaalalahanan ang CAAP na tutukan at siguruhing masisimulan at matatapos sa madaling panahon ang development projects sa airport,” the department added.

Tugade notes that with the upgrades in place, Zamboanga can expect significant growth in economic activity and opportunities.

Other rehabilitation projects currently lined up for the ZIA include – the repair and asphalt overlay of the runway and the grading of the runway strip for a safer and smoother landing of aircraft.
