Fil-American Chess Grandmaster Wesley So has added another accolade to his long list of achievements after claiming the top spot at the recently concluded 2021 Grand Chess Tour (GCT).

So achieved the feat after a duel with France’s Maxime Vachier-Lagrave in the eighth and penultimate round of the Sinquefield Cup, which ended in a draw. 

With this win, the 27-year-old GM is now a two-time GCT Tour champion with his first being in 2016. So now ties with World No. 1 Magnus Carlsen of Norway who won the tournament in 2015 and 2017.

So, who hails from Cavite, rose to the top of the rankings through points he accumulated by finishing third in the Superbet Chess Classic in Bucharest Romania in June, first in the Paris Rapid & Blitz in France the same month, and third in the Saint Louis Rapid & Blitz just over a week ago. 

Currently, So is ranked no. 9 among International Chess Federation chess players. He’s currently participating in the ongoing online Meltwater Champions Chess Tour (CCT) of Super Grandmasters and has won three of the tournament’s titles, specifically the Skilling Open, the Euro Opera Rapid, and the Chessable Masters leg.

He will play next in the Aimchess US Rapid, the 9th and final leg of the tournament which begins August 28.
