The Department of Transportation (DOTr) has finished the expansion and modernization of the General Santos International Airport, which is expected to boost tourism and trade in Mindanao.
Transportation Secretary Art Tugade said the upgraded airport can now accommodate bigger aircraft including the Boeing 747, Airbus A330, A340, and A350.
Apart from this, the following infrastructures have been rehabilitated: Passenger Terminal Building (PTB), Vehicular Parking Area, Powerhouse Building, Control Tower, and the Administration Building.
According to Tugade, the newly rebuilt airport will be inaugurated in September. And once fully operational, it’ll employ more than 1,200 individuals.
“Sa Sityembre ngayong taon ay nakatakda nating pasinayaan ang mga natapos na proyekto sa General Santos International Airport,” he said.
The General Santos International Airport is considered a ‘key gateway,’ operating and serving the regions of South Cotabato, Cotabato, Sultan Kudarat, Sarangani, and General Santos City.
With its completion, economic activity, tourism, and trade are expected to be bolstered.
“Malaking tulong din ang airport na ito sa mga kababayan natin sa Mindanao dahil sa hatid nitong mga oportunidad sa ekonomiya, trade at turismo,” Tugade emphasized.
