One of the country’s representatives in the Olympics’ Men’s Boxing category, Eumir Marcial, is getting closer to a gold medal win after knocking out his Armenian opponent Arman Darchinyan in the middleweight’s semifinals.

The match between Marcial and Darchinyan only lasted two minutes and eleven seconds after the Filipino fighter sent his opponent flying with a perfectly-timed right hook.

The punch landed straight to Darchinyan’s chin causing him to crash face-first onto the ring. The Armenian looked visibly dazed and confused after receiving the hit directly.

“I didn’t expect I would finish the fight in the first round because I know he’s a good boxer, a strong boxer. [But] that’s boxing, you know? You don’t expect the punch,” Marcial said.

With this win, the 30-year-old is assured of a bronze medal in the Olympics. He’ll be able to turn it into silver if he wins his next match against Ukrainian world champion Oleksandr Khyzhniak on August 5.

Khyzhniak and the Zamboanga native faced each other two years ago in a tournament in Bulgaria, but the latter failed to triumph over the Ukrainian fighter.

Boxer Nesthy Petecio has also been assured a medal in the Olympics and weightlifter Hidilyn Diaz took home the country’s first gold. This takes the Philippines medal count to three, a first since 1932.
