Siargao Island’s beauty surpasses boundaries. And that’s something the Philippine tourist destination proved when it landed a spot in TIME Magazine’s ‘World’s Greatest Places of 2021.’
The island, known as the surfing capital of the country, is included in the top 100 list – presented in no particular order.
“While destinations such as Boracay, Cebu and Palawan nailed the mass market, the teardrop–shaped island off the coast of Mindanao until recently had been best known to a dedicated band of surfers lured by consistent waves,” TIME wrote.
According to the US magazine, they solicited nominations from a consortium of correspondents and contributors to create the list, which pays “tribute to the people and businesses at the forefront of those industries who, amid extraordinary circumstances, found ways to adapt, build and innovate.”
TIME said Siargao’s ability to adapt to the pandemic, upgrade, and build were part of the reasons why the island was chosen to be part of the yearly roster.
The Department of Tourism welcomed Siargao’s inclusion into the list and assured that they’re doing their best to keep tourism safe in the Philippines.
“We are doubling our efforts to create a future of Philippine travel that is safe, more fun, and provides travelers with an authentic and meaningful experience throughout their journey,” Tourism Secretary Bernadette Romulo-Puyat said.
