The San Miguel Beermen has managed to claw their way up to fifth in the Philippine Cup standings after beating NorthPort Batang Pier, 88-86, in last night’s game (July 25) at the Ynares Sports Arena in Pasig City.
The Beermen’s forward Arwind Santos secured the team’s second victory after nailing a go-ahead jumper with only 1.2 seconds left in the clock, saving the team from a near upset.
“From the start, I knew that this would be a tough game for us because of the presence of Slaughter. But the team really wanted to win, especially Arwind,” said Coach Leo Austria
“Congrats Arwind for your winning shot, that’s what I was expecting from him,” he added.
This is the team’s second straight win after defeating the NLEX Warriors, 110-93, on Friday night (July 23) – bouncing back in the top half of the rankings after a shock first game loss to the current No.4 team Meralco.
On the other hand, Ginebra San Miguel has failed to make a much-needed comeback after being dealt with another loss against the Magnolia Hotshots, 89-79, in Sunday night’s game at the Ynares Sports Arena.
The Hotshots’ Paul Lee proved to be a formidable foe for Ginebra throughout the match, most especially in the last quarter where he closed the game with a 10-point lead over the Kings.
With a record of two losses and a single win, Ginebra finds itself placed 9th in the cup.
