Filipino football team Kaya FC has snatched a spot in the AFC Champions League tournament after defeating Shanghai Port FC on Wednesday.
They effectively overthrew the former Chinese Super League champs 1-0. The club will be competing in the league for the first time after holding off their Chinese rivals in a match held in Bangkok, Thailand’s Pathum Thani Stadium.
The Philippine football club’s winning goal was scored by Audie Menzim, which is a historic win for the club that was formed in 1996.
Kaya FC’s game is a landmark win for the team, who represented the country in an international tournament for the first time.
They now join the reigning domestic league champion United City in the expanded AFC Champions League competition.
Kaya FC will face Thailand’s BG Pathum United in the group stage on Friday. Their game will be held in the Pathum Thani Stadium.
After that, the Filipino team will face off with Vietnam’s Viettel FC on Tuesday (June 29), and AFC Champions League reigning titlist Ulsan Hyundai FC on July 2.
