Former University of the Philippines basketball player Juan Gomez de Liaño is set to play for the Japan B. League after inking a deal with Earthfriends Tokyo Z.

Liaño, who was part of the lineup of players that helped the Philippines top Group A in the FIBA Asia Cup Qualifiers, will play under Japan’s Asian Player quota system.

To make his entrance to the team official, Earthfriends Tokyo Z posted a video of the 21-year-old on their official YouTube Channel.

In the video, Liaño said he’s honored to have been chosen to be part of the team, which currently competes in Division 2 of the Japan B. League.

“I’m honored to be part of the Earth Friends Tokyo Z team. I’m very excited to battle it out and compete with you guys all throughout the season to be part of this journey,” he said.

“I’m looking forward to meeting you guys soon and I hope you guys support us through the challenges ahead,” Liaño added.

Liaño now joins Thirdy Ravena in the league, who plays in Division 1 of the tournament for pro ballclub San-En NeoPhoenix.

Before Liaño, Kiefer Ravena – Thirdy’s older brother – was also scouted by Japanese team Shiga Lakestars. However, the Philippine Basketball Association (PBA) rejected the older Ravena’s request to play overseas and asked him to honor his contract with local team NLEX.
