On June 3, the long-running American medical show ‘Grey’s Anatomy’ will close its 17th season.
The show, which has been running since 2005, will be featuring the story of a Filipina nurse named Gerlie Bernardo in its season finale, who’ll be played by Fil-Am actress Aina Dumlao.
According to Dumlao, the chance to tell the story of a Filipina nurse on the show is no small matter as it enables Filipino nurses all over the world to be acknowledged for their work – to be seen.
“Without giving too much away, I tried to infuse the nurturing aspect of Filipino frontline workers, specifically nurses, but then they also still smile and try to stay positive amidst everything that’s going on. If Filipino nurses see this all over the world, that they can actually feel themselves seen for the first time,” shared in an interview with ABS-CBN.
The Filipino community in the US has been criticizing the show since its airing, particularly for its lack of representation. In the US, Filipinos account for 4 percent of the overall nurse population.
Dumlao said getting picked to play the role was unreal, noting she’s glad to be a part of something that showcases Filipino stories.
“I basically had to pinch my cheeks and then, when I auditioned, I only saw like three pages or five pages of the script. But when I got the role, I read all of it. I’m like, ‘What? This is the kind of show? This exciting, amazing show that Filipinos get to be a part of!’ It’s very emotional. I’m not gonna cry but I feel like it’s such a long time coming,” she said.
Apart from her upcoming stint in ‘Grey’s Anatomy,’ Dumalao is also known for playing Andie Lee in ‘MacGyver’ and as Evelyn in the drama, horror-thriller flick ‘Sanzaru.’
She’s also set to star alongside ‘Chilling Adventures of Sabrina’ actress Miranda Otto and Michelle Vergara Moore in the Australian mini-series ‘The Unusual Suspects.’
