The 2022 Presidential Election is still a year away, but potential candidates are already making their way to headlines.

One of the most polarizing match-ups said to be running in next year’s election is the tandem of Davao City Mayor Sara Duterte-Carpio and incumbent President Rodrigo Duterte, who are said to be vying for the presidential and vice-presidential posts respectively.

The father and daughter team up have been a favorite in the rumor mill – with a lot of personalities already confirming their intention to run, though both have yet to personally acknowledged their desire to take part.

Though both have received much support from their constituents and party members, some are not as happy.

On Thursday (June 3), members of the Makabayan bloc expressed alarm over the potential pairing of Sara and Rodrigo.

Gabriela Women’s Party-list Rep. Arlene Brosas had some choice words for the prospective candidates, who she likened to a ‘deadly running-in-tandem.’

“Kung tatakbong vice president si President Duterte at tatakbong President ang kanyang anak na si Sara Duterte, running in tandem ito na nakamamatay. Pagpapatuloy ito ng ‘kill, kill, kill’, pagpapahirap at paglimas ng pondo ng bayan,” Brosas said during their group’s weekly press conference.

Meanwhile, Bayan Muna Representative Ferdinand Gaite believes that a possible reason for Rodrigo’s running for VP would be to avoid accountability.

“Iniisip siguro niya na pag siya’y tumakbo, ay ma-exculpate siya, mawawalan siya ng pananagutan dito sa kanyang mga kasalanan. Kung kaya’t ngayon, ang kanyang partido ay iniisip na patakbuhin siya as vice president,” Gaite said.

“Malinaw na hindi dapat payagan ng mamamayan na siya ay mawalan ng accountability, marami siyang kasalanan na dapat siyang managot,” he added.

Another Bayan Muna Representative, in the form of Carlos Zarate, also expressed distaste over Sara and Rodrigo’s possible bid.

“Wakasan na ang dinastiya gaya ng panawagan nating wakasan na ang riding in tandem, wakasan na din natin itong running in tandem na magpapatuloy sa impluwensiya at pagkontrol ng kasalukuyang administrasyon Duterte beyond 2022,” Zarate said.

Early this week, Rodrigo’s party list – Partido Demokratiko ng Pilipinas-Lakas ng Bayan (PDP-Laban) – adopted a new resolution urging the older Duterte to run for VP in the 2022 elections.

However, the move did no sit well with other party members.

Meanwhile, Albay Representative Joey Salceda announced the same week that Sara is indeed running for president, which he based on text exchanges he’s had with the mayor.

Although much has been said and speculated, Rodrigo and Sara have remained silent on the election issue.
