A year after his win against Chinese opponent Wei Xie at the Mall of Asia Arena in Pasay City, Team Lakay’s Danny Kingad is eyeing a rematch with American mixed martial artist Demetrious Johnson.
Kingad, who ranks second in the flyweight division, went into hiatus after winning against Xie in January 2020. However, the 25-year-old fighter is ready to enact his revenge against Johnson, who defeated him the year before.
Kingad considers Johnson as the greatest fighter of all time, who’s currently the top 1 flyweight contender and a 12-time Flyweight World Champion.
“Of course, he is the greatest of all time, the GOAT, and I would really like to have a rematch with him,” said the Filipino fighter.
According to Kingad, he immediately studied his losing fight against Johnson to work on the aspects that caused his defeat.
“After that fight, we watched it over and over again to see what went wrong for me. We really went back to square one for me to be able to sharpen those skills that Iacked against DJ.”
Before talks of a rematch even occurred between the two, Kingad was scheduled to clash against No. 4 Kairat Akhmetov last December, however, the fight was canceled due to COVID-19 concerns.
Kingad said he’s more than ready to face off once again with Johnson, especially with two years’ worth of preparation.
“I will definitely be back stronger. It’s been close to two years since we last two fought and a lot has already happened in our own careers. I’m more than ready to take on DJ again,” he said.
