A new drug that can suppress the spread of COVID-19 is set to be released in the United States within a period of four to five months.

The wonder drug called Molnupiravir is said to be effective in curbing the spread of the coronavirus by disrupting its viral replication process, according to epidemiologist Jill Roberts.

Besides coronavirus, the medication has also shown potential in treating other viral diseases such as SARS and MERS.

The new oral drug was developed by two big pharmaceutical companies, specifically Rigibel in Germany and Merck in the United States.

In their initial trial, scientists observed the effects of the drug through ferrets infected with COVID-19.

After delivering the drug to the test subjects, they found that the drug – which first showed effectivity in preventing death and hospitalization from coronavirus – was also capable of preventing the spread of the virus.

In an interview with WTSP, Roberts said the drug will be a great tool to prevent the spread of future virus-caused infection.

“This is a great tool to have to be able to know for future viruses maybe if we get a mutant that actually circumvents the vaccines, this drug will still work,” she stressed.

The drug also offers hope for those who don’t have the financial resources to get a vaccine as well as those who choose not to get vaccinated.

At present, the drug is currently in its third and final clinical trial in humans – completing the first and second with positive results.

If proven safe and effective, the drug will be available in the market in a couple of months.
