Alex Eala has once again proven her might on the tennis court after snatching the 2021 French Open girls’ doubles title with Russia’s Oksana Selekhmeteva at Roland Garros in Paris on Saturday (June 12).
The new achievement is now Eala’s second grand slam title after her winning stint at the 2020 Australian Open girls doubles meet with Indonesian partner Priska Nugroho.
Eala and Selekhmeteva snatched this year’s double title from the tandem of Maria Bondarenko from Russia and Hungary’s Amarissa Kiara Tóth, 6-0, 7-5.
The duo showed their dominance in the first set of the match, ending it in just 20- minutes. However, Toth and Bondarenko weren’t going down without a fight and easily turned the tables against the pair with a 4-2 lead.
Eala and Selekhmeteva found their footing once again in the succeeding rounds winning the next three games at 5-4 but their opponents bit back tying the game to 5-5.
The Filipino and Russian partners found their way once again in the next two rounds beating Toth and Bondarenko 7-5 to fully establish themselves as this year’s champions.
In her post-win interview, Eala thanked all the Filipinos who supported and watched her match. Apart from this, the 16-year-old athlete also paid tribute to the Philippines through her win, which was celebrating its Independence Day.
“Sa lahat ng mga Pinoy na nanood, maraming salamat po,” she said. “It’s actually (Philippine) Independence Day today, so I hope I gave my contribution to the country.”
Eala’s doubles win in the French Open makes up for her less than stellar performance in the girls’ singles category, where she lost in the first round.
