Although he has yet to confirm whether running for president will be at the top of his to-do list in 2022, Senator Richard Gordon is not ruling out the possibility of vying for the position.
According to Gordon, he’s confident that he can run the country if he was to be elected as its top-most executive.
“Pag tinatanong ako, palagay ko kaya ko. Sinasabi ko kaya kong umupo dyan sa posisyon na yan, kung ngayon ay mapapaandar ko yan,” he shared in a televised interview on Friday (May 7).
Gordon doubled down on his remarks by saying he’s among the ‘most qualified’ to hold the position.
“If you ask me, I’m qualified, I think I’m one of the most qualified, I’m sorry I have to say that dahil kailangan sabihin mo. Dahil wala naman magsasabi na iba,” he said.
Earlier this week, Gordon revealed that he’s already mulling over the presidential bid for 2022 – even studying for it.
“I would be lying if I don’t consider it. I would say na pagka kaya ko at hindi ko hinarap, e baka sabihin ko sa habambuhay ba’t di mo hinarap dahil natakot ako? Takot ako pero hindi ako duwag. Pinagaaralan namin, nagko-conslta ako and I still have until October to decide…Maybe. Maybe, I will consider running again,” Gordon told reporters in an online forum Tuesday (May 4).
If he chooses to run in 2022, it will be his second time to compete for the position. The senator first ran for the presidency in 2010 landing sixth in the polls. He lost to former President Benigno Aquino III.
Gordon started his political career as mayor of Olongapo City – a position he held from 1980 to 1986. He was first elected senator in the 2004 elections and again in 2016.
He also serves as chairman of the Philippine Red Cross (PRC).
