Travel time from Ortigas to Taguig will get significantly shorter once the BGC-Ortigas Center Road Link Project officially opens on Independence Day, June 12, said Department of Public Works and Highways Secretary Mark Villar.

According to Villar, the BGC-Ortigas Center Link Project – once fully operational – will compress travel time between the two busiest business districts to only 5 minutes.

“Kung yung biyahe dati puwedeng umabot ng isang oras, baka mga 5 minutes na lang from Ortigas to Makati and Taguig,” Villar shared in an interview with ANC’s Headstart.

Villar also noted that the link road will decongest traffic on the Epifanio de Los Santos Avenue (EDSA) and C-5 Road.

“Once that’s finished it will significantly decongest EDSA. We’re looking at anywhere between 20% [and] 25% reduction,” he said.

Initially, the project was slated to be completed by 2020, however, operations were affected by the pandemic lockdown.

Villar said they had to find ways to continue with the construction due to the constraints of the coronavirus.

“We had to make adjustments definitely and it was more challenging, but we’re still moving forward. Our timelines are still there. We’re still committed on delivering on the projects that we committed to,” he said.

The opening was then rescheduled to May of this year, however, the agency had to complete the remaining civil works.

Apart from the BGC-Ortigas Link Road, Villar mentioned that the Estrella-Pantaleon bridge – connecting Mandaluyong City and Makati City – will also open soon after.

“Shortly thereafter, a few weeks after, we will be opening Estrella-Pantaleon Bridge. If you go there, you can already walk on the whole alignment,” Villar noted.
