Grandmaster Wesley So is undoubtedly one of the best chess players to hail from the Philippines. At such a young age, he’s managed to make waves in the world of professional chess – triumphing over well-known names in the sport.

To honor So’s numerous achievements, the newly inaugurated Professional Chess Association of the Philippines (PCAP) decided to use the former’s name for its second-ever conference – the GM Wesley So Cup.

So, who now represents the USA, has given a nod to the tournament. In support, the 27-year-old provided the cash pot for PCAP’s second outing.

According to PCAP President-Commissioner Atty. Paul Elauria, So personally pledged to provide the funding for prizes and requested for the money to be given directly to the players.

“Aside from lending his name, So likewise personally pledged to provide the funds for the event’s cash prizes,” Elauria told Journal Online.

“His only request in sponsoring the second leg of the PCAP tournament is to ensure that the cash prizes are distributed to the players themselves. This is because GM So wanted to help the players directly,” he added.

Those who place in the competition will be able to get the following cash prizes:

  • Champion – PHP 150, 000
  • 1st Runner-up – PHP 75, 000
  • 2nd Runner-up – PHP 40, 000
  • 3rd Runner-up – PHP 20, 000

Meanwhile, individual cash prizes will also be given for Best Import, Player of the Conference, and Finals Most Valuable Player – at P10,000 each.

PCAP’s reinforced tournament will officially start on May 15 and will last until July 31 of this year. The matches will be live-streamed on their official Facebook page

A total of 24 teams are expected to compete in the contest – the same participants who competed in the chess agency’s first-ever competition won by the Laguna Heroes. Teams will be playing seven boards per match.

At the moment, So is competing at the Meltwater Champions Chess Tour. The Filipino-American chess master is currently occupying first place in overall rankings after winning at the Skillings Open and Opera Rapid legs of the tour.
