Filipino boyband SB19 has once again made history after being nominated for Top Social Artist at the 2021 Billboard Music Awards – a first for any Southeast Asian country.

The homegrown Pinoy Pop (P-Pop) group will be taking on the likes of Ariana Grande, Seventeen, BTS, and Blackpink in the same category.

The group announced their nomination on Twitter last night (April 29) to the delight of their fans.

Fans were quick to congratulate the five-member ensemble – composed of Justin, Ken, Stell, and Pablo – on the same social platform with the ‘#SB19forBBMAs’ – rising to the third spot in Twitter’s local Trending Topic.

According to Billboard, the category will be fan-voted – the artist or group with the most votes at the end of the tally will receive the award.

“Billboard Music Awards finalists and winners are based on key fan interactions with music, including album and digital song sales, streaming, radio airplay, and social engagement, tracked by Billboard and its data partners, including MRC Data. Fan-voted categories include Top Social Artist and Top Collaboration,” the award-giving body explained.

BTS has managed to snag the Top Social Artist award for four consecutive years with the last being in 2020.

SB19 first burst into the Philippine music scene back in 2018. Their first stint in the charts was in November 2020 – where they were included in Billboard’s Next Big Sound Chart.

Apart from this, they managed to top Billboard’s LyricFind Global chart a total of seven times with singles ‘Alab,’ ‘Hanggang sa Huli,’ ‘Wag Mong Ikunot ang Iyong Noo,’ ‘Love Goes’, ‘Ikako,’ ‘Go Up,’ and ‘Tila Luha.’

The 2021 BBMAs will air live on May 23 at the Microsoft Theater in Los Angeles and will be hosted by Nick Jonas.
