Converge Information and Communications Technology has inked a binding term sheet with Singapore’s Keppel Telecommunications & Transportation (Keppel T&T), giving it usage rights over one fiber pair on the main trunk of the Bifrost Cable System.

The deal was announced Wednesday, April 21.

Besides this, Converge also entered into a development deal with Keppel T&T’s subsidiary company – Keppel Midgard Holdings (KMH). The partnership will see the Filipino internet company and KMH jointly develop a branch on the Bifrost Cable System that will supposedly land in Davao.

The Bifrost Cable System is expected to launch by 2024. At 15,000 kilometers, it “will be the largest capacity high-speed transmission cable across the Pacific Ocean.” Once completed, the cable system will connect Singapore, Indonesia, the Philippines, Guam, and the west coast of North America.

CEO Dennis Anthony Uy said the cooperation with the aforementioned companies is not only a milestone for Converge but also the Philippines.

“This is an important milestone not just for Converge but also for the Philippines as we expect to experience faster internet speeds and greater resiliency within our fast-growing fiber network with the completion of this project,” he shared.

According to Converge, it has already set aside P5 billion for the project – which will see the company access speeds of up to 15 Tbps.

“Our investment into one full fiber pair, connecting us to Singapore and the west coast of North America, will allow us to independently activate at will up to 15Tbps (Terabits per second) of capacity to either country using the latest technology. Furthermore, our ongoing construction of our National backbone spanning the whole country will allow Converge to distribute this capacity from Davao to any point in the Philippines,” Uy shared.

Meanwhile, Keppel T&T CEO Thomas Pang said the partnership will realize their goal of expanding their connectivity platform. He notes that it’s among the goals they wish to achieve by 2030.
