After KZ Tandingan was revealed to be the voice behind Disney’s first Filipino Original Soundtrack “Gabay,” another Filipino artist is making waves for being part of a new, trilingual single from the animation studio.
Filipino Rapper Matthaios, alongside South East Asian acts Raisa from Indonesia, Malaysia’s YonnyBoii, and Thai Rapper SPRITE, has been chosen by the Walt Disney Studios to breathe life to its new single “Trust Again” for the film “Raya and the Last Dragon.”
Matthaios shared in a tweet that everything still feels unreal to him.
“Trust Again” effectively resounds the film’s main theme, which tackles the acceptance of diversity and unity in the face of a single foe. The song has also been described as a multi-territorial track that references Thai, Filipino, Indonesian, and Malaysian culture and makes use of traditional Southeast Asian instruments.
Walt Disney Studios officially released the song on March 12 on Spotify and other digital streaming platforms. It was accompanied by a music video on YouTube.
“Raya and the Last Dragon” is Disney’s first film that draws inspiration from Southeast Asian culture and traditions. It follows titular character Raya and her band of misfits in their quest to find and collect the missing pieces of a sacred dragon gem – the only way to defeat undying monsters that turn people into stone.
The titular character, Raya, was voiced by Vietnamese-American actress Kelly Marie Tran. “Raya and the Last Dragon” is available for streaming on Disney+.
Meanwhile, Filipino artist Matthaios first burst into the limelight with his viral single “Binibini,” which has now amassed more than 21 million views on YouTube and has been streamed 22 million times on Spotify.
